Our 30th Anniversary

Since the first issue of Bloomberg Markets was published in July 1992, financial markets have been through a period of unprecedented transformation. This magazine has evolved along with them, constantly finding new ways to provide customers with the information and insights they need to navigate change, fuel growth, and improve our world.

When I welcomed readers to that inaugural issue, China was only the world's ninth-largest economy. The euro was still seven years away. Exchange-traded funds had not yet been launched. Just before the issue was published, representatives from 179 nations met at a United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro to begin addressing a global threat called “climate change." And just after we published, the first photos appeared on a new medium few people had heard of: the internet.

Each of these forces of change has helped transform markets. Now, as we look to the next 30 years and beyond, we can see some — but far from all — of the global and technological developments that will reshape our world, from the clean energy revolution to machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Today global markets are vastly more integrated, sophisticated, and fast-moving than they were when we started this magazine. Their ability to adapt in ways that promote and spread growth has never been greater, and neither has the value of reliable information. Bloomberg will continue finding new ways to deliver it to our customers — and to maximize humanity's returns from the only constant the world has ever known: change.
